Yamaguchi Yuuya had found himself in a rut. Despite his recent educational achievement, the local job market was experiencing a recession, and without the ability to secure a steady source of income, Yuuya was forced to accept his uncle’s offer to become caretaker of the relative’s vacant home. Alone and downtrodden, Yuuya would simply waste the nights with long hot baths, forgetting his woes in insincere lethargy. Yet on such an unassuming evening, when the young man felt nothing would ever turn his life around, something incredible happened: a goddess suddenly appeared, offering to grant whatever his heart desired.
Ore no Megamisama! (俺の女神さまっ!) is an Ah! My Goddess inspired eroge published by Honkijiru in 2007. It has no sequel or side story.

In the United States, failure to challenge infringement of an intellectual property can result in the forfeiture of the creator’s ownership of said property. For this reason, it is not unusual for holders of an asset to aggressively protect what they’ve created, irrespective of how insignificant or benign the violation may seem. As one infamous example, consider former vampire novelist Ann Rice. Yet in Japan, a signatory member of the World Intellectual Property Organization Copyright Treaty and subject to the exact same guidelines, intellectual infringement is not only permitted; it’s unofficially encouraged. I profess total ignorance at how this can be allowed while the right to impose litigation against intellectual violations remains in effect, but the entire affair is something that I’ve always admired. It has long been my assumption, that such individuals willingly relinquish their legal privileges in exchange for greater endearment from the consumer population. In plain English? They love fans more than wealth.

Unless you systematically avoid the ultra popular manga series from Japan (and the anime that are based upon them), there should be no question where Ore no Megamisama! blatantly rips off its existence from: Ah! My Goddess – the crowning achievement of mangaka Fujishima Kosuke. From the font style used in the title logo, to the specifics of story concept, to the character designs themselves: the eroge is obviously a hentai rehash of an incredibly popular and well established multimedia series. I suppose only Japan, or nations that just don’t give a damn about copyrights, would allow such a thing to exist without drawing the ire of bloodsucking lawyers, for Honkijiru not only ripped off Fujishima’s work; they had the audacity to actually copyright the violation. Now that takes some serious cojones. From a legal standpoint, this has to be a scenario that would constitute being in the Twilight Zone, for it practically means legalized piracy. The answer for how this is possible remains simple: the creator of Ah! My Goddess just doesn’t care – perhaps he even supports it in secrecy – and that’s just one more reason why someone like him is so awesome.

Ore no Megamisama! tells the story of college student Keiichi Morisato Yuuya Yamaguchi, who because of his pure heart raging libido, has been chosen by Heaven to receive a single wish. The goddess Belldandy Rean is sent down to Earth to ask for his wish, and tells him that he can potentially wish for anything that he wants, from becoming a billionaire to destroying the world in an instant. Yuuya believes the encounter is a prank set up by his senpai, and with that notion in mind, wishes Rean to stay with him forever be his whore wife. Ironically, he does not fully comprehend the outcome of his wish and is stunned on realizing that Rean will now be living with him. Nonetheless Yuuya proceeds to treat the goddess kindly order the goddess for a blowjob as proof of her commitment to him, which she is compelled to comply. Havoc inevitably ensues when Rean’s divine siblings, Urd and Skuld Aira and Kyachua, arrive on Earth the next day to determine why their sister has not returned home, quickly learning of the unusual circumstances. This frantic situation is further compounded by the unannounced arrival of Yuuya’s caring younger sister Megumi Morisato horny older senpai Yukiko Touyama. Thus our tale of romantic comedy endless sex ensues.

For something that’s little more than a low budget sexfest, Ore no Megamisama! enjoys a surprising number of notable features. Due to the dialog intensive script, the title maintains significant interaction between the cast, resulting in an unusually long (though certainly welcomed) plot. In relation to this, eighty-two sex scenes are attainable, predominantly consisting of the traditional one-on-one lovemaking; although tentacle rape, twosomes, and threesomes are littered in small amounts. The eroge especially delivers on illustrations during the adult content – over 400 individual images – thereby providing legroom for their protracted duration. While the lower resolution and simplistic style might disappoint those accustomed to cream of the crop titles, the overall art is far from displeasing. Throw in the addition of standard quality voice acting, as all the female characters are adequately serviced, and one can easily see there’s a strong foundation in place.

Unfortunately Ore no Megamisama! has significant failings that prevent it from being a quality title, presenting as many negatives as it does positives. The plot, while quite extensive, is incredibly simplistic and predictable – especially for those already aware of the original series the eroge is based off. This is further plagued by the limitation of a single genuine story arc, providing little to zero difference between the five good endings. While the individual paper dolls enjoy a large number of changing facial expressions, they never shift body positions, making them little more than two-dimensional statues. Sharing in the artistic misery, backgrounds suffer severe overuse from the severe lack of location variety, because everything takes place in the protagonist’s house. Perhaps most distressing of all, the soundtrack to the title is a monument of abysmal failure, easily ranking among the worst music ever composed for gaming: listening to cats dying in a train wreck is more soothing. Hardcore fans of Ah! My Godddess may also find the differences between the main characters of their beloved series and the cast of this hentai knockoff to be a letdown. While Rean is as patient and pacifistic as Belldandy, she tends to exhibit too much attitude. Aira is sultry like Urd, but has a heaping of tsundere in her. Kyachua is the same spoiled know-it all personality as Skuld, yet she happily calls on the player with an affectionate, “Oniichan” (not to mention ends all her sentences with “desu” like a certain Rozen Maiden doll). All of this is clearly out of character as hell… although the whole horny goddess thing is probably more out of character.

If you’re seriously interested in Ore no Megamisama!, then its reasonable to assume that you’re already a fan of Ah! My Godddess. While there are a number of eroge that draw inspiration from the Fujishima creation, I have never seen a commercial title mimic so much of it in a single package. For all intents and purposes, Ore no Megamisama! should be considered a doujin, as far too much is copied directly. If you like Ah! My Godddess and don’t mind seeing hentai based off it, then you’ll easily be attracted the title. If you don’t, look elsewhere for entertainment: this is a severely niche product for a severely niche interest group.

— Scored Summary —
Scenario: 5 out of 10. The hentai version of Ah! My Goddess, plain and simple. The characters are likable if you like the original and the story is enjoyable if you enjoyed the original. Plot is rather long for a sexfest, but once you’ve played through it once, there’s really no reason to play it again due to the linear script. Five possible endings if you discount the unwanted “bad” ends, one of which is a harem conclusion. Overall not all that bad, but not all that good either.
Visual: 10 out of 20. While clearly ripped off, the character designs are pleasing and the quantity of event illustrations is one of the major highlights. Unfortunately the single bodied paper dolls and handful of differing backgrounds create a sense of of half-assed laziness.
Audio: 7 out of 20. The music is outright terrible and makes me want to cry out in suffering: it’s like someone recorded monkeys banging on digital synthesizers. Fortunately the voice acting is highly abounding, following the typical “everyone but the player” standard.
Erotica: 40 out of 50. There are over eighty sex scenes, so the title easily constitutes as a sexfest. Each is comprised of four images on average, spanning about ten minutes in length. Although there’s a handful of tentacle rape and anal violation, the bulk of it is consensual. Way too lighthearted to be considered dark eroge, so those who dislike them shouldn’t think this is one, because it’s not.
Mechanics: 0 point neutrality. The typical “choose your response” menu system that most eroge share… although in this case, it would be a “choose the girl you want to purse” menu system. Your choice rarely has an actual impact in the dialog being exchanged, and sometimes you’ll sex a girl you’ve been totally ignoring.
Final Score: 61 out of 100. Fans of Ah! My Goddess should immediately check out the demo for Ore no Megamisama! and confirm whether or not it meets individual expectations. Others should simply move along and find something else to invest their cash on, as the price tag is way too high for indulging curiosity. Not recommended for purchase.
